2nd P-day email -Haircuts already!

Ok so I’m trying to type really fast so if I have any mistakes that’s why... I loved that quote Harrison had. I’m a huge quote guy. Anyways let me start off by saying... this place is the biggest spiritual realm of all time. I would hate it if it wasn’t for the spirit, or positive chi, because it is the same here every day. I have seriously learned so much here. I’ll start by answering the questions

Q- What is your favorite food so far?

A- we had a really good chicken curry on rice so that is my favorite so far...

Q- How is the teaching going? Is it getting easier?

A- Teaching is getting really easy because all you have to do is teach by the spirit that’s already present in all the rooms

Q- Tell me about the spiritual side of things. Everyone says the spirit is very strong in the MTCs and that it is something you really notice.

A- I’ve already said it’s a giant spiritual realm... need I go further?

Q- How is the teaching going? Is it difficult? How many investigators do you teach each day?

A- Second time you’ve asked this question... but I teach 2 investigators a day. And have a total of 6 investigators. They’re all easy to teach.

Q- What is your typical day like? What do you do all day?

A- pray.eat. study. class. teach. eat. study class teach. soccer. study class class class class eat pray sleep
Q- Did you get my package? Any letters yet?

A- yes thanks

Q- Have any Dear Elders come yet?

A- yes

Q- How was the little town of Chorley?

A- cool

Q- Do you need me to send you anything?

A- no

Q- Does the senior couple stay in the MTC as long as you younger guys do?

A-no they left 4 days ago

Q- How is the accent coming? Is it hard to understand your companion? How is your German doing?

A- The accent is fine I can understand a lot of people. I’m starting to get a little twang as well

Q-. Tell me the names of the guys in your district?

A- elder keir, bentke, kopishke, titus, sparks, johnson, cowitz

Q- Do you talk to Elder Blumenthal a lot?

A- no, not too much, he is a different zone

Q- What do you play for sports?

A- just soccer

Q- Have you taken photos or written any real letters home?

A- I’ve taken about 150 photos. And no letters home.

That was a ton of Q's

But anyways Sunday we went on a church history tour that was really cool I saw all the places that pres. Moody was talking about and more. The house that Heber Kimball stayed in where he got a vision of the legions of demons coming after him is completely run down and just torn up and stuff all the windows were boarded up. We saw where president Hinckley stayed at in Preston.Which reminds me that the MTC president's wife is president Hinckley’s daughter so that’s pretty cool.   There is also elder Watt who was a semi-pro soccer player in Scotland but broke his leg when he moved up to the pros and basically never played since.. Then he left to go on his mission. I gave a talk last Sunday as well about obedience. I basically just conduct meetings as a district leader and teach my district on Sunday. Everyone is always complaining that they are so tired but I love all the sleep I get. The weather has been lovely not much rain at all. Make sure to tell president Moody that elder Sparks, Blumenthal and I are currently addicted to vimto the fizzy drink. Its kinda weird that everyone serves you room temp drinks. Last Friday we went to Manchester for street contacting. I walked up to this sweet old man who was just enjoying the sun on a bench right in the Manchester Piccadilly center. The convo went something like this...

me; good afternoon how are you doing today

old guy; wha do you want

me; oh just seeing how your day is going

old guy; P... off

me: ok have a good rest of the day sir (:

And it wasn’t much better after that everyone basically stares at you and doesn’t walk to talk to you. Everyone just said no and would shooo us away. I just got back from the Chorley market today I had to go buy some shoe spray to make them waterproof. I’ve been wearing dad’s ugly tie a lot and everyone loves it. I got a haircut today as well and the lady straight up murdered my Ryan Gosling haircut. it’s probably one of the worst haircuts I’ve ever received.

There is an elder here that is from Spain who has an impressive story. He joined the church and his family disowned him when he was like 15 and has been living on his own. He saved all the money he had to come on a mission and didn’t know any English a week ago but stays up an hour later and gets up an hour earlier to learn English and is going into the field with everyone else. Elder watt the pro soccer player also gave me a Scottish tartan tie which is way cool. Everyone thinks that Americans have the coolest accent so I have been trying to do an English accent and everyone else does an American accent. But onto my comp he is pretty cool more of a musical kid he is a really good singer but not so much at sports athletics. We get along really well.  As for that story you gave me it is pretty cool but I don’t plan on getting married soon but still cool story none the less. Shout out this week to, ALEXIS and MEAGAN for writing me... other than family members.. So me and elder Fingerle are quickly becoming really good friends. He is from Germany but speaks English very well. He plans on going to byu after his mission so I told him that I went there and now we are hoping that he gets in which he definitely will. We are also hoping that we get to be comps at some point in our mission. There is an elder here who lived in the May hall at byu and I have never seen him before which is crazy. Both my teachers are girls but are super funny. They have the best stories and are super crazy. Anyways that’s all for now...

- love you all, Joey....
He is not so thrilled with the haircut!

Church History Tour

Sister Williams added many photos today of the sites the Elders visited.  Again, I feel so blessed to have these photos to share, but mostly I am grateful that I get to see my son as he prepares to teach the people of England.
We began at "The Old Cock Pit" where the early missionaries held meetings along with the Temperance Group.
Apostles Heber C Kimball, Orson Hyde, Willard Richards and several others including Joseph Fielding arrived in Liverpool on July 20, 1837. They proceeded to Preston where Joseph Fielding's brother invited them to preach at his church their first Sunday. After several members asked to be baptized, they were not allowed to use the church so eventually starting holding meetings at The Cockpit. Pres. Walker's ancestor found the church here and was baptized.

The oblisk was the center of their preaching.
Here President Hinckley taught the first night of his mission.

Pres. Hinckley told his companion he had the wrong man, as he was so shy.

Current Preston Town Square set up for Olmypic coverage.

The first missionaries rented two top bedrooms in this building on St. Wilfred and Fox Street. Here they were attacked by evil spirits the night before the first baptisms.   Pres. Walker explained that when Heber C. Kimball returned and told Joseph Smith of the experience, Joseph Smith said it was Satan trying to stop the work from spreading.

The last paragraph

At one time there were more members in England than in America.

By the River Ribble where the first baptisms outside of North America took place.

Two men raced across this bridge to see who would be the first baptized. George D. Watt won.

The baptisms took place by the tree as the water was smoother there.

All of the Elders on the bridge

Pres. Walker pointing to 15 Wadham Road, the first apartment of Pres. Hinckley when he arrived in England in the early 1930's

Sis. Walker tells of her father's discouragement during those first few weeks. He wrote a letter to his father telling him he thought he was wasting time and money.

Back came the famous response:
"Forget yourself and go to work."

At this point, Pres, Hinckley went to his bedroom and dedicated his life to the Lord.
"You never know what great things the Lord is preparing you for as you serve your mission."

Heber C Kimball was asked to come to Downham and Chatburn, a 30 mile walk up the Ribble Valley. The village looks exactly as it did in 1837, except for the pavement covering the cobblestone road.

This view from the church door is supposed to be one of the most beautiful from any church in England.
The village of Downham is owned by Lord and Lady Clitheroe who own all the propery to the top of Pendle Hill in the background.

Many people were baptized here at the Chatburn site.Sometimes they had to chop 12-14 inches of ice off the water.

This site was just discovered and verified three or four years ago.

The end of a very special day.  President Walker tells the Elders that they have walked on sacred ground.

1st P-day Email

Ok so it’s our pday now. I am a district leader and my district is pretty cool. I have two elders from Germany so everyone is learning German in our district and it’s quite funny. I have a kid from South Africa who is really funny. Then I have a kid from Cali and Utah and Canada. The kid from Utah knows Kelly Judson and McKay Madsen. Everyone thinks it’s really cool that I played lacrosse for BYU.  One of the elders from Germany was a professional soccer player so we played with him yesterday and he is ridiculously good. I also have a couple who are about 65 in my district. My companion is elder Keir and is from Scotland. He knows a ton about the gospel which is nice when we teach people because he takes up about 2/3 the time teaching the people. Oh speaking about investigators we had to teach someone who is just crazy and in the middle of the lesson we were giving her I just started cracking up and I couldn’t control myself from laughing and she started laughing and then my comp started laughing as well. The food is pretty good I’m still learning what to stay away from. Like the cheese is really disgusting and the bread has no flavor. But I think I’m getting used to all the food. It is really like prison here and I’m starting to hate it. But I like it at the same time. Sundays have quickly become my favorite day because we listen to devotionals and we don’t really have to do much, like teach people. Everything in my suitcase was fine but I did forget a little like body wash so we are going out to Chorley to get everything we need. Friday we go to Manchester for street contacting which everyone is dreading. I thought I was the only one that would have problems teaching and stuff but seriously everyone is around where I am just some people have a little more knowledge. Don’t write me every day just once a week would suffice. We are only allowed to wear our suits, which stinks, but it really isn’t that hot out at all but it’s only rained once since I’ve been here and that was Friday. The days are so long here though like seriously it feels like everything is moving so slow but there still really isn’t enough time to do everything. Anyways sorry if this is short but I have stuff that needs to be attended to. Also I have already started to pick up a very minute accent. Shout out to ALI Noorda for being the first person to write to me. It was probably because she was in London. But everyone now treats me like a prince because I got the only letter so far from a girl so everyone thinks I’m a pimp or something. But it’s been real hard work

love you all... Joey

Ok just a continuation from the other email I just sent. Yea I only have 5 minutes left but Elder Keir is way cool, we get along really well. Also I became pretty good friends with Elder Fingerle and he is from Germany. He teaches me some German everyday but he is really cool and he knows a ton of girls that want to write me I guess. They loved the fact that I was from Las Vegas so they all want to write me he said so soon I will be talking with German girls, but I got to go... also put my blog up on facebook and tell people to write me... seriously anyone.

Another day, another photo!

Lucky me!  More photos from the MTC.  Today I found photos of each Elder with the Mission President and his wife.  Happy day!
